The pub’s story
The Rusty Seagull occupies a pair of former shops on Portobello High Street. Icosis Architects describes the premises as early Edwardian and records its 2012 conversion work for The Skylark: shopfronts and the ceiling line were restored, a kitchen and bar inserted, and old timber and steel reused. Those are dates for the earlier premises and refit, not the opening of today’s pub. Vault City subsequently opened its Taproom and Smokehouse here in July 2022, before that operation closed in late 2024. Winton Brewery took the site in July 2025 and opened The Rusty Seagull on 15 September. The current draw is Winton’s own beers alongside guest lines, with music and changing food offers advertised by the venue. The dark frontage and wide windows give it the appearance of a High Street shopfront bar rather than an old coaching inn.
What to notice
- 01
The wide windows and central entrance retain the scale of a High Street shopfront rather than a purpose-built inn.
- 02
The former Skylark refit restored the shopfronts and ceiling line in 2012; its architect’s account explains the earlier layout.
- 03
Look for Winton Brewery’s own beers alongside the changing guest selection; current food and music details are published by the venue.

Sources & confidence
The architect’s own 2012 project account supplies the missing building and refit history, explicitly describing two early Edwardian shops and the Skylark alterations. Vault City’s 2022 retrospective dates its taproom opening to July; CAMRA and DRAM document the later closure and Winton takeover. These distinct operator and architectural records replace undated name lists. Historical fit-out details are not assumed to survive unchanged today. Official and CAMRA bar hours were checked on 2 September 2026. The approved reference set now includes the previously inspected June 2026 Pubs Galore exterior. No listed status or older pub foundation is claimed.
