Why it is in the guide

The pub’s story

At 42 Bernard Street, Henry Hall’s Carriers Quarters is one of the clearest surviving links between Leith’s trade, tenement streets and public-house culture. CAMRA records a Category B-listed, one-star nationally important historic pub interior at the base of an early-19th-century sandstone tenement. It also notes that the premises were operating as a wine and spirit merchant in 1890, and records earlier names including Merman and Todd’s Tap. The recurring 1785 plaque is handled carefully here: it is a heritage claim rather than a verified opening date. Current 2024-25 exterior references agree on the weathered sandstone ground floor, arched openings and a dark wooden nameboard above the central entrance. That makes this the only Leith intake venue ready for a later exact sign portrait, once you choose to add images.

During your visit

What to notice

  1. 01

Look for the arched ground-floor openings and the weathered sandstone of the tenement base.

  2. 02

The direct-fixed dark wooden nameboard is the reliable sign feature, not the surrounding street dressing.

  3. 03

Treat the 1785 plaque and stories of sailors or carriers as claims, not settled founding history.

Sources & confidence

Five sources checked 14 August 2026. CAMRA supplies the historic-interior and merchant-use evidence; independent 2024 and 2025 images plus a current City listing make the scoped frontage treatment ready for a future portrait. The 1785 claim remains attributed only.
