The Waiting Room

Trains ran under this corner from 1884 until 1962. The bar on the redeveloped station site borrows its name from the platforms, and the old lattice footbridge still crosses the line nearby.

Why it is in the guide

The pub’s story

The Waiting Room borrows its name from Morningside Road station, which opened below the bridge in 1884 and closed to passengers in 1962. The lattice footbridge, street-level ticket office and part of a platform survive nearby, but the pub is not an old station room. CAMRA records a later single-storey building on the redeveloped site. Council files show the premises becoming a full public house in 1996, when shop and pub space were combined. The frontage was altered and signed in 1997, then gained street canopies in 2005. A 2007 licensing record names The Waiting Room at 7-8 Belhaven Terrace under Grange Inns. CAMRA also lists Belhaven Inn as a previous name, but gives no date and no reviewed source confirms it, so it remains an attributed lead. Today the wide cafe-bar steps across three levels, with picture windows, table service, cask ale, sport and weekend breakfasts. The railway story is best read outside, then carried in through the name.

What to notice

  1. 01

The name is a tribute. CAMRA records a post-1962 building on the redeveloped station site, not a surviving station waiting room.

  2. 02

The genuine railway remains are nearby: a lattice footbridge, the street-level ticket office and part of a platform survive around the bridge.

  3. 03

CAMRA lists Belhaven Inn as a previous name but gives no date, and no other reviewed source confirms it. Treat it as an attributed lead.

Sources & confidence

The official venue history and Railscot independently establish the station dates and surviving railway features. CAMRA identifies the pub building as a later structure on the redeveloped site. Council planning records add a premises-specific sequence: shop and pub space became a full public house in 1996, the frontage and signs changed in 1997, and canopies were approved in 2005. A 2007 licensing record names The Waiting Room and Grange Inns at 7-8 Belhaven Terrace. CAMRA's undated Previous Names field says Belhaven Inn, but no other reviewed source confirms it, so the name is attributed and kept out of the timeline. The official site and CAMRA agree on weekly opening hours. Their weekend breakfast times conflict, so no breakfast start time is published.
