Why it is in the guide

The pub’s story

Whistle Binkies is a late-night live-music bar in the South Bridge vaults, entered down stairs from 4-6 South Bridge and also accessible from Niddry Street. The venue’s name comes from an eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Scottish song anthology, while its physical identity comes from the vaulted rooms rather than from unverified ghost stories attached to them. A 2005 University of Edinburgh guide already described an underground pub with live bands every night, and CAMRA’s 2024 survey records the present performance room, alcoves and quieter bookable side spaces. Today the operator advertises free-entry music every night, with four bands on weekdays and up to six on Fridays and Saturdays. It is best understood as a long-running live-performance venue in historic vault space. Rather than a reason to turn folklore into architectural fact.

Ghost stories and darker history

What the stories say

Whistle Binkies is a live-music venue reached from South Bridge and Niddry Street, with a genuine vaulted layout. Its operator and technical material support the performance spaces; they do not prove a haunting.

The Imp

Forever Edinburgh describes a mischievous spirit nicknamed the Imp, said to move objects, lock doors and change clocks. These are traditional reports attached to the venue, not incidents independently documented by the business or authorities.

Reported folklore in Forever Edinburgh’s haunted-bars guide.

The Watcher

The same guide recounts reports of a figure in seventeenth-century dress called the Watcher. No source reviewed identifies the figure or verifies the sightings.

Reported folklore in Forever Edinburgh’s haunted-bars guide.

Folklore, not fact: The venue’s vaulted setting and music programme are factual. The Imp and Watcher are named local legends, presented here as stories people tell rather than evidence of paranormal activity.

Sources & confidence

The venue’s official site and June 2025 technical book are the strongest current sources for the address, layout and seven-day programme. A Bruce Group account is used only for the qualified circa-1988 establishment claim; its conflicting address is not adopted. No unsupported vault legend is presented as venue-specific history.
